Ghana’s E-Passport Revolution: A Game-Changer for the Nation and the Diaspora

A Global Milestone in Passport Innovation

Ghana has officially launched its chip-embedded e-passport, marking a significant leap in modernizing its passport system. This monumental step was spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama and is already proving to be a massive success. By joining over 140 countries worldwide in issuing cutting-edge e-passports, Ghana is firmly positioning itself on the global map of technological advancement in public service.

Since the rollout of the 24-hour passport printing service on April 28, 2025, the country has issued a staggering 31,935 high-tech passports in just the first month. This development is more than just an administrative win—it’s a symbol of Ghana’s commitment to global integration, citizen empowerment, and digital transformation.

Beyond a Travel Document: A Symbol of Progress

Ghana’s new e-passport is not just a travel document—it’s a bold statement about national identity, security, and modern governance. For years, Ghanaians endured long delays, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and outdated systems. But under President Mahama’s leadership, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implemented a transformative solution.

The new passports come with over 175 advanced security features, including biometric verification, a polycarbonate data page, and ICAO-compliant encryption. This makes them virtually impossible to forge, enabling Ghanaians to travel with confidence, ease, and international acceptance.

Inclusive Access for All Ghanaians—Home and Abroad

One of the most impressive aspects of this initiative is its accessibility. Whether you live in Accra, Tamale, or abroad in cities like London, Toronto, or Johannesburg, these passports are readily available. Ghana’s embassies and high commissions worldwide are fully equipped to issue the new e-passports, ensuring that the diaspora stays connected to their homeland.

This inclusivity is helping to unite Ghanaians globally, transforming what was once just a legal document into a symbol of national pride and connectivity.

24-Hour Service: Efficiency at Its Best

Ghana’s 24-hour passport service is a game-changer. The days of waiting months for a passport are over. In just one month, over 31,900 passports have been issued, a clear sign that the system is working efficiently. Ghanaians who previously never owned a passport are now rushing to apply due to the speed, convenience, and affordability of the process.

Whether applying for a standard passport (15-day turnaround) or an expedited one (as little as 24 hours), citizens now enjoy unmatched accessibility. This shift is also encouraging Ghanaians globally to acquire or renew their passports through official channels.

Doorstep Delivery and E-Tracking: Convenience Redefined

To make the process even smoother, the government has partnered with Ghana Post and trusted local couriers like TrustKate to deliver passports directly to applicants—at no extra cost. This eliminates the need for multiple trips to application centers and cuts out shady middlemen.

With the introduction of a new e-tracking system, applicants can now monitor their passport application from submission to delivery. This added transparency ensures trust and accountability, hallmarks of a modern, citizen-focused government.

Midnight Oversight: Leadership in Action

On May 24, 2025, the Minister for Foreign Affairs made a surprise midnight visit to the Accra Passport Office to verify that 24-hour operations were running smoothly. What she found was inspiring—a team of dedicated staff working overnight to ensure timely delivery of passports.

This visit was not a publicity stunt. It was a powerful show of leadership, reinforcing the government’s 24-hour economy agenda and proving that the system is truly functioning. The results speak for themselves: 31,900 passports issued, and counting.

Elevating Ghana’s Global Reputation

These new passports come equipped with biometric features like fingerprint and facial recognition, aligning with strict ICAO standards. This enhances security, reduces the risk of identity fraud, and ensures smooth international travel.

More importantly, it signals to the world that Ghana is embracing technological advancement, prioritizing efficiency, and building international credibility. This passport is not just a gateway for travel—it’s a diplomatic and economic tool, opening doors for tourism, investment, and global collaboration.

Driving a 24-Hour Economy

This initiative is a core pillar of President Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy, which aims to make government services more efficient, responsive, and people-centered. By modernizing the passport system, Ghana is improving both citizen experience and international perception.

From reducing passport fees (from ₵500 to ₵350) to implementing service timelines backed by accountability measures—such as sanctions for delayed processing—this administration is delivering concrete results.

A Citizen-First Revolution

For decades, Ghanaians have struggled with middlemen, long queues, and bureaucratic hurdles, leaving over 70,000 passports uncollected. But now, those days are fading. With courier delivery, e-tracking, and a 24-hour hotline, citizens finally have a system that works for them.

If a passport is not delivered within 15 days (standard) or 5 days (expedited), staff face consequences. This accountability and transparency are new hallmarks of the passport system—and they matter.

A National Achievement, A Global Future

Ghana’s chip-embedded e-passport is a landmark achievement. The fact that nearly 32,000 passports were printed in just one month is a clear testament to what’s possible with visionary leadership, technological investment, and relentless execution.

This isn’t just a new passport. It’s a new chapter for Ghana—a nation rising on the global stage, offering its citizens a ticket to the world and a symbol of national pride.
